May 4th-10th is the 99th anniversary of “Be Kind To Animals” week. Started by the American Humane Association in 1915, this is a week to celebrate and appreciate the animals in your life. Here are some ideas:
– Bring toys to a local shelter
– Place a box in your house for your cat to explore
– Take an extra walk with your dog
– Donate leftover food, toys and beds to a rescue group
– Make your yard a habitat for wildlife
– Support legislation and politicians that protect animals
– Bring overdue pets in for annual exams and preventative care
– Start a new activity such as flyball, agility or obedience with your dog
– Explore a new trail with your horse
– Put up a bird house
– Supervise your cat outdoors to prevent predation on wild animals
– Teach children how to safely interact with animals
The American Humane Association is a nonprofit with the following mission, “…to ensure the welfare, wellness and well-being of animals and children, and to unleash the full potential of the bond between humans and animals to the mutual benefit of both.”
